A Few Things To Do Before Calling For Emergency Locksmith Services

Posted on: 15 May 2017

Being locked out of your car, home, or office is a royal pain in the (you know what). Sometimes this happens because a key is not working in the lock properly and other times it is due to a lost or misplaced key. Hopefully, you did not lose your cell phone or lock it inside with your key. No matter what time or day, calling a locksmith will result in an emergency call fee. If you have a few minutes, there are a few things you should do before calling a professional and having to pay for his or her services.

Make Sure You Are Locked Out Completely

Just because the door you are trying is locked does not mean there is no other way in. Sometimes a car's back door will be unlocked or a window in a home able to be pushed open. In addition, stop and think for a minute if there is someone else with a key who could come to your rescue. You may have to listen to a friend gripe and complain that you woke him or her up at 2 am but it is better than having to pay a locksmith.

Clean Your Key and the Lock

Take a good look at your key. If there is any gunk or debris on it, clean it off. You should also clean off anything that is sticky. In other words, use water to clean your keys. If the key still is not working, clean out the lock. One way to do this is by spraying a lubricant/cleaner into the keyhole. Allow it to sit for a few minutes and then try the key again.

Check the Door's Fit

Sometimes the problem is that the door has slightly moved somehow and the lock is jammed. Look at the door in relation to the frame. If something looks off, try to adjust the door slightly. You may need to find something to move the door such as a big wrench or screwdriver. If moving the door takes care of the problem, be sure to contact a locksmith to adjust the lock so it works properly in the new position.

Of course, there are going to be times when you must contact a locksmith to get inside. Only call one company. If they do not come right away it is alright to call again and ask for an estimated arrival time. Be prepared to show some time of identification. If it is locked inside, be ready to show it as soon as you can get in or be locked out again. Be courteous. The locksmith did not damage or lose your key so you had to call him or her, just be glad you can get someone to you in the middle of the night so you are not stuck until morning.
