Security Tips For Apartment Living

If you live in an apartment complex then you should still be just as concerned with making sure your home is as safe and protected as a single family residence. The information provided to you here is going to help educate you on some things you can do in and around your apartment to better protect yourself and decrease the chances of someone breaking in.

Get secondary locks for your windows

While you may not be able to have window guards installed on the exterior of your windows when you are renting an apartment, you can still add extra levels of protection to them. You can purchase secondary window locks at your local hardware store that you can screw in to place at the top or bottom of the window to make it so the window can't be worked open from the outside.

Add more protection to your sliding glass door

Sliding glass doors can often be quite easy for an experienced criminal to get into. Therefore, it's important for you to take extra steps to secure it. You can purchase secondary locks for the sliding glass door just like the ones suggested above for regular windows. Plus, you can also have a stick cut at your local hardware store that will fit in the tract of your slider when it is closed.

Make sure your porch light is working

Always keep a spare bulb on hand incase your porch light goes out on you. As soon as the light is out you want to replace it. This way, a criminal can't hide on your porch in the darkness while they work on trying to get in to your apartment.

Give your cell phone number to the manager and your neighbors

Your manager should be given your new cell phone number any time you change it so they can always reach you in case of an emergency. You should also give your cell number to your closest neighbors so they can reach you if they feel something that's not right is happening in or near your apartment.

Consider getting a good safe

You may want to get yourself a good safe to keep your valuable items protected. If you do use a safe then it's also a good idea for you to have a locksmith, like those at Hicks Safes & Locks Inc, come out every so often to make sure it is properly maintained.
