Preparing Your Home Before A Family Vacation

Posted on: 3 May 2017

As you prepare for your family's next vacation, you may be concerned about keeping your home secure. A locksmith can help you to take a few additional precautions to secure your home and help to prevent burglaries. Here are a few steps to consider when talking with your locksmith before you head off on a happy vacation.

Add Keyless Locks

Keyless locks make it easy to control who has access to your home, and they can also prevent you from worrying about losing your house keys. You can add a handset and deadbolt to all your entry doors, or you can simply opt for one of the two to be keyless. Look for a model that lets you program multiple pass codes into the locking mechanism, and assign a temporary code for your dog walker or house sitter. When you return from your vacation, you can simply delete the code, preventing everyone but your family members from having access to the home.

Install Motion Lights

If you don't already have motion lights on the exterior of your home, you may want to consider adding them before you head out on vacation. These lights turn on whenever they detect movement, which helps to reduce the amount of cover burglars have in the dark. If you live close to your neighbors and they know you are out of town, they may even call the police if they notice the motion lights are triggered. Be sure to install the lights near every entrance to your home and your garage, and consider putting them in blind spots on your property, such as the space on the side of your home.

Replace Your Timers

Having timers on your lights can be a great way to make your home appear to be occupied, but potential burglars may notice a pattern of when the lights turn on each day. Have your locksmith replace your old timers with smart timers, which can be connected to an app on your smartphone. Through the app, you can turn lights on and off whenever you like. You can alternate which bedroom lights are turned on at night, and you can even adjust the time that your porch light gets turned on every evening. With lights going on and off unexpectedly, potential burglars may have a more difficult time determining whether or not you are home.

Consider having your locksmith like Arapahoe County Security Center Inc do an inspection of your home before you leave on vacation to identify any other ways you can boost security while you are gone. With new locks, lights, and timers in place, your home can be a bit more difficult for burglars to target.
