If you own one or multiple rental units, you'll probably need to hire a locksmith at some point or another. One thing that you might need help with is re-keying locks. These are a few top signs that you might need to re-key the locks on your rental unit.
All of the Keys Have Been Lost
Not only should your tenants have keys to their apartments or rental homes, but you should probably have at least one key to the property yourself. If all of the keys to one of your rental units has been lost, however, you might be wondering what to do. One good option in this scenario is to have the existing locks re-keyed. Then, consider having multiple keys made to fit the newly re-keyed lock. Then you can give some to your tenants, and you can keep some for your own purposes, too.
A Tenant Has Moved Out
When a tenant moves out, there are various things that you have to do before you are prepared to show the unit to others and allow a new tenant to move in. One thing that you will need to do, for example, is make sure that the unit is secured. You don't want an old tenant to be able to access the property after they have moved out, either to vandalize or damage the property while it's empty or to potentially cause problems for any new tenants who might move in. You might think that you need to replace the lock, but you don't usually have to do that. Instead, you can consider re-keying.
The Lock is in Good Condition
You could be wondering if your locks are a good candidate for lock re-keying. Of course, if the lock itself is damaged, then a full replacement might be the better idea. This is also true if the lock isn't particularly secure. If it's a good lock that is in generally good condition, however, re-keying could be the right option.
If you are a landlord, there's a good chance that you will find yourself in a situation in which you should re-key the locks on one of your rental units. Luckily, this is something that a locksmith can help you out with. If you already have a locksmith who you regularly work with for the care and maintenance of your rental properties, they should be able to assist. Otherwise, simply look for a local locksmith to inquire about having them rekey locks and perform various other services.Share
